Hello loves,Happy World Menopause Day! I’m here doing my part to raise awareness and destigmatize this topic that affects over 1 billion women around the world. It is baffling to me that we prepare girls and women for puberty and motherhood but the transition out of our fertile years has largely been done privately. The main question I hear from women 40 and older is “why didn’t anybody warn me?” Now that the topic is starting to trend, there is a lot of conflicting information out there and we are being marketed to as well. Perimenopause is not a disease to manage or a problem to solve but rather a lens through which to view all aspects of our health and wellbeing. The change in hormones affects the various systems in our bodies (not just hot flashes) but can also cause a shift in our values, relationships and outlook on life. Perimenopause symptoms are often a reflection of our environment and the quality of care we have received thus far– they can be a trigger, but it is not the whole story. It is an opportunity to make changes to better support our longevity and quality of life. If I haven’t lost you, basically what I’m saying is that, like anything else I believe about health, this journey will be different based on our individual biology and circumstances. While the way we approach supporting ourselves will differ, we can come together around the common experiences associated with this transition. I’d love to hear your thoughts!
